My Supports
Factors that are important to me within my daily life is the ability to communicate. I live over an hour from my nearest relative and if I did not have the capacity to communicate with them would cause anxiety and depression. I use my phone and my computer to stay in touch with my children, grandchild, siblings, and my mother, and if I did not have a phone or a computer, I would not be able to communicate. I could write letters, but technology gives me the opportunity to connect and communicate instantly. Being able to check in with family and hear what is going on in their lives keeps us to stay connected.
The challenge I chose to imagine is that my ninety-year-old mother is ill, and I do not have any means of communication; I would not know how she is doing. I would not know that my mom is sick and that my family needs me to come and check on her.
The potential benefit of having cell phones and laptops is that I will be able to communicate people who don’t live close to me. I would also benefit from the ability to communicate because I have the capacity to keep up with what is going on in the world and with family.

Yes, we are so lucky nowadays to have so many means of instant communication, like phones and email. Technology has given us a lot of ways to maintain close ties with loved ones who live far away, who in turn give us much-needed emotional support. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how much we rely on technology such as phones and computers for communication and to get things done. Last Friday the power was out at the community college where I work. There are windows in my office so I was not in complete darkness, but office phone did not work and my lap top only worked as long as the battery lasted. Eventually, the college closed and they sent everyone home, but it is situations like that which remind me how much we rely on the support of technology and electricity to get anything done. We are kind of immobilized without it.
ReplyDeleteSylvia,
ReplyDeleteI too stressed the importance of technology being a sense of support for me, specifically with my cell phone. It's hard to believe how life was before cell phones and emails and texting. Technology makes life soooo much easier and allows us to connect with family and friends who are far away from us.
Sylvia,
ReplyDeleteI remember a time, about 18 years ago when I did not have a cell phone.I managed to get around without GPS and without communicating on the phone. Today, I can not imagine leaving the house without my cell phone and I would feel lost. I rely on the GPS and the ability to communicate when I want. Yes we are dependent on technology and I am thankful for the means to communicate.
Sylvia, you and I selected factors that are not people. I chose music. Music for me is my peace. Music always understands how I feel and changes my mood in a positive direction. I did not even consider technology. When I forget my cell phone I can't call anyone because I no longer have a need to memorize numbers. Without a phone my life would end...period.
